Fonts and Film Noir

I am going to look at a number of font websites to help me choose the main fonts for the titles in my opening scene. These include DaFont, Font Meme and Linotype. I have also searched on Google for fonts from a number of existing classic film noirs.

One site I looked at was Font Meme - this site was useful because it splits fonts into different categories and there is one on film. It also sub-divides the film section into genres, which includes crime and thriller sections (which might contain fonts appropriate for the film noir genre). The downside of this site is that you can't download fonts, but you can find the names of fonts which you can search for elsewhere.

Here I found a number of fonts that I might want to use:

  • for a crime series called 'Serpent' called Curve Extra Bold
  • for the crime thriller 'Uncut Gems' called Tungsten Bold
  • for the gangster movie 'Gangster Squad' called Decotura
  • for the modern noir, crime movie 'Broken City' called Akzidenz Grotesk
  • for the 1930s-crime film 'Road to Perdition' called Road to Perdition
  • for the crime movie 'Pulp Fiction' called Aachen Medium/Aachen Bold
Another site is used was DaFont. This site was useful because all fonts are available for free download. The site also splits fonts into different categories and allows you to see the title of your film in each font. The downside of this site is that it doesn't split the fonts up into movie genres, so it takes a lot of time to search for fonts that might be appropriate.

Here I found some fonts that I might want to use:

  • Film Noir by Joseph Dawson
  • Richard True Crime by Maelle. K and Thomas Boucherie
Another site I used was Lintoype. Here, there is a section for selected films in categories by year and under headings like 'Oscar Winners' and 'Classics'.

Here I found some fonts I might want to use:
  • for a crime film 'The Bank Job' called Neue Helvetica 93 Black Extended
  • for the gangster film 'The Untouchables' called Perpetua
  • for the neo-noir crime film 'The Black Dahlia' called Bauer Bodoni Roman
I then searched on Google using terms such as 'film noir fonts', 'crime fonts' and the names of specific films from the genre. This led me to a site called Cufon Fonts, which included categories such as 'Noir Fonts'.

Here I found some potential fonts I might want use, including:
  • True Crimes
  • Thorne Shaded
  • Seaside Resort
  • Straight Face
  • Argaila Regular
  • Schaefter
  • Essays 1743
  • Bolide
Other fonts I found by searching online, that I may want to use include:
  • Francois One
  • Liberator
  • Bree Serif
