I have noticed some common features about the film titles/names of movies belonging to the film noir genre. Often, the title is the name of a woman (or an allusion to her), indicating the strong presence of a femme fatale figure in the film ('Gilda', 'Laura', 'The Lady From Shanghai'). Often the titles are short, featuring only one or two words ('Spellbound', 'Notorious'). Quite often the titles are mysterious, creating enigm ('Brick', 'The Third Man', 'The Postman Always Rings Twice'), whilst they also often reference a prop that is of significance ('The Glass Key', 'The Maltese Falcon'). Finally, they also often reference crime, reinforcing the dark nature of films from the genre ('The Killers', 'This Gun for Hire').
