Now that I have looked at a number of opening scenes from different genres I have noticed that certain conventions keep coming up, including:

Production company logos/idents

Titles

Introduction of character and character traits

Introduction of setting

Establishing genre

Creating enigma/mystery

Sometimes there is a separate title sequence

Music reflective of genre
