Closer Analysis of Opening Scenes - Character, Setting and Enigma - Introduction

Looking at opening scenes has made me realise that alongside the technical conventions, such as idents and titles, opening scenes are often used to do one or more of the following, alongside making it clear which genre the film belongs to:

  • Introduce characters and their traits
  • Introduce settings
  • Create enigma or mystery
I have decided to look more closely at the ways in which filmmakers do these things, through analysis of two films which introduce character, two films which focus on establishing setting and two films which withhold narrative information to create enigma for the spectator.
